Cap – Cities Art Projects took part to the realization of the workshop created by Latitudo Art Projects with the artist Sara Basta for the third edition of Magic Carpets Italia and La Fantastica, a festival addressed to the Trullo district, its multiple facets, to its history and its inhabitants.
The workshop has been realized in the Trullo district, where the well-known writer Gianni Rodari set La Torta in Cielo (1964).
Sara Basta created a group of 15 women belonging from the neighborhood to carry out the workshop with. The first phase consisted in the artist’s choice of some phrases taken from Gianni Rodari’s La Grammatica della Fantasia. The sentences were then transferred to the women who embroided them on fabrics. The workshop lasted about 3 months, from May to September 2020, and took place in the former Baccelli school.
Following the workshop and the MagiC Carpets project, some women decided to create a new working group in the same neighborhood called the “Trullo Girls Workshop”.
Among the main objectives are: the enhancement of the neighborhood and the attempt to make its history and beauty known even outside, the desire to make known, especially to the youngest, the ancient art of wool weaving, to develop eco-sustainable methods using waste materials and local wool to preserve the importance of reuse and recycling for the new generations and above all the importance of promoting local activities and producers.
Following participation in the workshops, the Trullo Girls Workshop won the European Community Award CO-CREATE & COMPREHEND, with which it was able to purchase the materials to carry out further work.
